A Belfast landmark with its distinctive yellow colour, the City Hospital Tower is 15 stories and 76 m (250 ft) in height. The City Hospital is a 900-bed modern university teaching hospital providing local acute services and key regional specialities. Designed by Louis Adair Roche and opened in January 1986. Its lengthy journey from Roche’s drawing board at Munce and Kennedy led to it being described as “the baby born with grey hair” in a TV report on its opening.
