Just noticed that the rehabilitation works to replace the “temporary” car park on the Merrion Street side are very well advanced. The ground which was car park has been raked to a fine tilt and it may even be seeded already. It will soon look almost as it did before.

Nice to see the grass back….but can you believe it cost €250,000. How on earth could it cost so much!

OPW staff don’t work for free. The cost includes labour.

that actual cost was supposed to be in the region of 30k according to Martin don’t dare interrupt me, Manseragh … can’t remember what he said the other 230 was going on.

€250,000.00 Wow! Even Croke Park’s new pitch didn’t cost that much (well by the look of it a few weeks back)

But a bit of grass seed from outta Lenehan’s up the road would have done the job.

More than a bit of grass seed going on there.

The front of Leinster House is boxed off.

If they are getting rid of the so called “plinth” it will be worth every penny.

Although it’s a pity visitors to The National Library and Museum are subjected to this view at the height of the tourist season.

Are they removing both car parks?

I didn’t think the rear car park (Kildare st) was getting a make over too. Although it should.

I took a few snaps while I was down there but I’m having difficulty uploading them.
There is also some work being carried out to the rear facade facing Leinster Lawn.
I reckon the €250,000 cost encompasses these works as well as the relaying of the lawn.
      I hope it does.

It was on the Merrion St side where the temporary car park was to be removed. Dont know about any work on the Kildare St side of the Oireachtas, though I saw the hoarding.

The car park is now gone, and the new green turf looks very lush there today. Turf was laid, not seeded, to show this speedy growth. A few “tram tracks” are visible where the turf has yet to mesh together. All in all it is very hard to tell before and after, – doubtless at some time in the far future historians are going to be puzzled by dating grass / no grass / grass yet again photos.

      Ok, somebody clear this up.

Am I right to say the front of Leinster House is facing Merrion Sq, and the back facing Kildare St?

Given that the address (of the building) is given as Leinster House, Kildare St, Dublin 2, I always assumed that the west elevation facing Kildare St was the front.

      From the Oireachtas website:

      Merrion Street Entrance

The official entrance is the Garden Front – the original main door of the building, where distinguished visitors are received.

It really is the nicer side and is a pity most of the tourists are shuffled past the sweet shop and workmans entrance on Kildare st 🙂

Kudos to the OPW. I think it looks fantastic. Makes that rustic facade intelligible again. Merrion Square West just increased in elegance substantially.

It is what it is. A nice, plain lawn. And now it’d be really lovely to be able to see into Merrion Square from the pavements. It’s a thicket at present.

Maybe know we can do something to make the otherside more like it used to be….minus victoria of course.

      The Backside :).

So now we know. The White House in Washimgton DC is modelled on the tradesmans entrance to what is now our parliament..

The Kildare Street front is the principal elevation and entrance to Leinster House. The Garden Front’s entrance is the modern-day ceremonial entrance, purely because the forecourt has been a kip for the past 60 years.

Passed by Leinster house this morning to admire the restored lawn.

Only I couldn’t see half it due to a line of cars parked on a tarmac road across the centre of the lawn in front of the Collins/Griffith memorial. Not to mention this road goes along both sides as well. My memories of Leinster lawn are very different to what I saw this morning.

      WTF

Surely the lawn has not been restored in keeping with planning? Planners, please elaborate????

This really does my head in.

Has the Garden Front (i.e. the back) ever been cleaned or repointed? To me it has always seemed very dingy in comparison to the principal elevation on Kildare St. If the forecourt there ever were restored and the bewildering amount of ‘protective’ fencing removed, there would be a strong case for reinstating the historic plinth (yes, minus Vicky), with a new sculpture commissioned – even shock, horror – a representaional one. Ideas?

      .

Do we need to start shooting TDs to stop them parking in their fecking front garden?
