Digging out a basement floor

I was looking at purchasing a house where the basement (Which makes up about 1/2 the houses living area) head height is only 6’3″. I was wondering if anyone had any experience in digging out a basement? What kind of problems did you come across? How much did it set you back?
The floor area of the basement is C.25msq and the house was built C.1880. Also the house is about 15m from a canal. So I am not sure if there would be complications with damp etc
