Thought some of you might be interested in a couple of pics I took last night.
Seems they were testing the lights on the new Eircom headquarters last night.maxi

InactiveGreat shots.
I like the insect zapper blue.
They had these lights up at the new Hilton in Kilmainham for a while, when it opened first, but they seem to have got bored with them now, or maybe they just rented them for six months.
It will smarten up the place though. I like that building, Tony Reddy does some good stuff, if they can just keep him away from apartment blocks.

They’ve got the wow factor but I actually think they’re pretty unsubtle – when you try to blanket a facade like that the effect is undermined by the general office lighting behind – as shown perfectly in the shots above. It’s much more effective to highlight the floor zones.
Tony Reddy does some good stuff couldn’t agree more re the apartments but I double dare you to back that up with more than 2 examples of a decent building of any other type!!

‘some good stuff” does not imply entire buildings. anyway, you deliberately said ‘more than 2’, because you knew there were only 2, right?

OK, the Eircom HQ is 1 and the Kilmainham Hilton (part of) is 2
For the record, I also think that their Parnell St. block (on the right) from 15 years ? ago, stands up pretty well and deserves credit for it’s restrained design and strong urban scale. I don’t know anything about the apartments in it, if they’re fabulous, I suppose I’ll have to take back what I said earlier. - August 14, 2008 at 11:58 am #802714

InactiveInteresting discussion; I like lighting and fireworks and all that glitzy stuff, but how does it look during the day? (Surely the acid test.) Actually, the Eircom bldg looks pretty good. I agree with gunter about the Parnell St block – as a long-term but generally short-period visitor to Dublin, this was one of the first developments that said to me: ‘This city is changing.’ Also, the pic shows the genuinely urban scale of the street now, such a contrast to 20 years ago. All the high-rise nuts should study this pic to understand what urban scale is about and how it has nothing to do with (extreme) height. (I know, here we go again…) Not so much location, location, location as enclosure, enclosure, enclosure.

InactiveSo here we go way of topic, but I wish we could start thinking of the western part of Parnell St as quite a good street, linking some important city areas, OCS, Capel St, Moore Street, the ILAC center, etc. Sometimes the materials and detailing isn’t good, but as pointed out above, the scale and urban form is. However, because it is thought of as a bad, bad street no thought is put into the footpaths etc, which are awful for an area with quite high pedestrian traffic.
