Built Heritage

that’s an incredibly vague request! built heritage is a vast area…as is conservation. what are you looking for exactly. the DIT library is full of books on the subject but it depends what you need.

Ronan- get the f#ck back to whoever accepted your vague and broad thesis proposal, sit down with them and narrow down your field of research before you end up scrapng out of this project with 41% and a big pain in the hole with the whole shebang once you have to get stuck into it.

It’s madness to tackle a subject you don’t display any kind of initial knowledge of in your post as a masters thesis.

sorry the post was so large an area, basically what I’m hoping to research is the relationship between owners and occupiers of protected structures and the local planning authorities implementation of the law. I would like to research how aware owners and occupiers of the built heritage are of their legal responsibilities and are local authorities the right organisation to be looking after its implementation or should it be managed at a more national level with a large skills base in the area, similar to England’s system.

You should speak to groups like An Taisce or Dublin Civic Trust or local heritage groups which would be actively trying to enforce the protection of the built heritage.

You might also consider No 1 – 5 Beresford Place as a case study because the beautiful and no doubt very expensive restoration of nos. 1 and 2 sits so starkly against the appalling condition of the Stella Maris premises and Paddy Wackery Inn next door.

You should also contact Claire Horgan the City Heritage Officer and find out how on earth she physically manages to monitor the 100s of protected structures in the city with little or no staff, resourcres and general DCC indifference.

Thanks a million Stephen that’s a great help. From what I’ve been reading there seems to be big issue with money alright and that maybe one of the reason why I would feel that the built heritage may benefit from pooling skills, although I have seen that some of the local authorities are taking on conservation officers.
