Screedless underfloor heating

Anyone got any experience to report on screed less underfloor heating ? I have seen one or two variations at trade shows where small bore pipes are inserted into either a dense gypsum or polystyrene base , with only a hard setting skim coat over . It would be good to hear from und users/builders/specifiers how it works in practice . i.e. can timber cope with heat source so closs to soffit ?
