Tutti Frutti: Build Your Own Home Sweet Home competition

Sponsored by Urban Splash, Tutti Frutti is an open international competition to offer 26 canal-side building plots in a sustainable community at New Islington, Manchester’s Millennium Community. Urban Splash got the idea for Tutti Frutti after the company visited Borneo Sporenburg, a series of one-off designed homes designed by West 8 in Amsterdam.

Urban Splash will help with the planning process and also assist with the co-ordination of the building site, as all the new houses will be built at the same time. Ultimately the judges will select the winners and assemble the street from the models – you won’t be in control of which plot you get allocated. We will design and provide the landscaping and public realm around the plots. There will be a shared private garden for the competition-winning residents and the occupiers of the scheme next door. In addition, there’s loads of public open space around New Islington. The Partnership has built a new park, two new canals and a network of squares and spaces that are open to the public.

Eligibility extends to architects, budding property developers and builders who can demonstrate their ability to finance the purchase of the plot and build costs, and produce a scale model of their house. There is no fee to enter.

One winner will receive a free plot of land to build the winning house design. Twenty-five winners will receive the right to purchase a plot of land and build their home on it. Each plot will be 15 metres in length with small, medium and large widths ranging from 4 to 5 metres. A small plot costs £160,000; a medium plot costs £180,000; and a large plot costs £200,000.

The jury is comprised of: Nick Johnson, Deputy CEO, Urban Splash; Will Alsop, SMC Alsop Architects; Griff Rhys-Jones, TV presenter; Peter Saville, Graphic Designer and Creative Director; Wayne Hemmingway, Property Developer and Style Guru; Andrew Grant, Grant Associates, Landscape Designer; David Chilton, Regional Director, English Partnerships; Lyn Fenton, Director, Ancoats Urban Village Company; Eddie Smith, Deputy CEO, New East Manchester Ltd; and Ellis Woodman, Buildings Editor of Building Design.

The registration deadline is August 17, 2007, and the design submission deadline is September 7, 2007. Winners will be notified on September 21, 2007.
