This comes as good news. One of the biggest eyesores in the city – the vacant lot at Ormond Quay – is finally going to be redeveloped. The brief is calling for a building of “exceptional contemporary design and quality”.
Just out of curiosity more than anything, would this site have been of sufficient size for the new Abbey Theatre? As it stands, it looks likely to be apartments or possibly a hotel.

i reckon that site is smaller than the existing Abbey footprint… Once upon a time before the Celtic Tiger, I collected my rent allowance there….

Wonder what happened with the Pierse deal?

From the small print of the tender offer: ‘Tenderers should familiarise themselves with a recent An Bord Pleanála decision, Reference Number PL 29N.213115 (P.A. Register Reference Number 5882/04) in respect of this site.’
You can find the decision at http://www.pleanala.ie/data1/searchdetails.asp?id=4506921&caseno=213115
It says permission has been granted – so no answer to the mystery.

According to the Corpo, Pierse didn’t want the site after the Bord lopped a floor off it. The purchaser would have to either do a deal with Gilroy McMahon, (assuming Pierse permit that – if necessary) or apply for a new permission. The date at which the penalties for non-completion kick in of March 2007 is a misprint – it will be December 08
