ParticipantIs architecture required to be original? Can we create new forms?
What is required in order to achieve originality?
I see buildings proposed for Dublin as for Dubai and they are very similar, does it matter?
Check this development in Dubai:

http://realestate.theemiratesnetwork.com/developments/dubai/dubai_marina/infinity_tower.phpmost buildings like everything else are not completely original, as there are only so many things you can do.
philosophers would argue there are no original thoughts.
that does not mean that everything is a waste of time. the idea is only part of whole picture.
take two painting of apples , one will definetely be better than the other.

InactiveSeen that building about a week ago, it was advertised in an Aer Lingus on flight magazine.
But even the shape wasn’t original (which ever was first) as a building, as a few pages later a an identical shape appeared again, as a perfume bottle.
Most new buildings will be similar to another. Very few are truely unique. One of the few in recent years may be the CCTV building. - August 16, 2006 at 10:58 pm #784143

InactiveOk, so the proposal for U2’s tower isn´t original, but what is the difference with the one in Dubai better? I mean, they are the same shape so they can be easily compared. The one in Dubai looks like a better proposal from the image anyway.
If we say that the shape won’t be original -Afterall how many cubic buildings are there?- we can just hope that the intention behind having that building for that location in Dublin is not based on the “unique” shape of the building! Right?

InactiveWell, as far as I know the turning torso in Sweeden is the first twisting building so none of these are original. The turning torso really seems to have started something though since there are now twisting towers being built everywhere such as in Dublin, Istanbul, Shanghai, Chicago and more, The twist is a nice idea but I do think that as more get built they’ll start to lose their originality.
U2 and the Dubai twister are very different though since the Dubai one tops 1000 feet and is also being built in an environment which will have about 200 towers around it, a few even taller than it.

InactiveUnique it is not!
One could argue that it is original as it is a shape that does not exist in this island, forgetting the global context.
Maybe it is creative, maybe the introduction of an alien shape in the irish context can create new ideas in planners, architects and citizens. Afterall architecture is not all about shapes and forms.
Maybe that tower is more that just a pretty form!

Inactivethere is more to architecture than mindlessly chasing new forms for thier own sake. architecture should firstly involve itself with its own integrity and not be drawn into the fruitless pursuit of incessent novelty.

InactiveReplying to What?:
Yes, but the concept behind the U2 tower design seems to simply be to be novel. If it is not novel then it is nothing. - August 22, 2006 at 5:30 pm #784149
