ParticipantI am moving from the states to Dublin at the first of July. Any comments/ideas on areas that are desirable to live in or areas that you would recommend that I stay away from? Will be looking for a job at an architecture firm shortly after settiling down and any suggestions for decent firms for a graduate architect with four years of experience would be welcome as well.
Thanks in advance - June 21, 2005 at 5:05 pm #757249

ParticipantDesirable areas could mean different things
here’s a tiny sample:
Snob value
Foxrock, Howth, Killiney, DalkeyGood train connection to city centre
(On the DART or Luas lines):
Dun Laoghaire, Dundrum, Blackrock, Castleknock, RanelaghBy the sea
Sandymount, Blackrock, KillineyQuality of housing
Glenageary, Foxrock, Killiney, Rathmines, DrummcondraLively/hip areas
Ranelagh, Portobello, Temple BarMy favourite would be Ranelagh as it has most of the above (except the sea) and you can walk there from the city centre or catch the luas.
You need a large budget. Even half a million $ would only get you a small 2 bedroom house in these areas.

ParticipantFor Character
Fatima Mansions – although you’d better be quick
St Michaels House, Inchicore…..just a few minutes from the city centre in a charming village location
Ballymun – might be a bit far from a cappuccino though
Darndale……nestling among the soft rolling hills of north county Dublin - June 21, 2005 at 11:58 pm #757251

ParticipantThanks for your initial comments. I am sorry for being so vague on my initial post.
I am specifically looking for a place to rent with roommates for a couple of months. I would like my own room in a shared apartment or house. I am interested in areas that are not too suburban like, maybe something on the up and coming in terms of repuation, close to transportation to the city center, and that are fairly safe. I am not particularly interested in snobiness or areas with the coolest pubs-some local atmosphere and nieghborhood cohesiveness and flavor is more what I am looking for.
Again, thanks in advance for your help. - June 22, 2005 at 12:16 am #757252

commuting in Dublin is a nightmare… I would suggest basing your accomodation in relation to your place of work

Participantjust get any place in dublin and when you find employment work out the best bus/luas/train routes and then base your next move on that.
