      Archiseek / Ireland / News / 2005 / April 1

The Architectural Association of Ireland in association with The Department of The Environment, Heritage And Local Government, in the implementation of the “Action on Architecture 2002-2005” report, will run a Public Lecture series on Contemporary Architecture. The Series aims to develop an understanding of the ways in which architecture has been conceived and developed during the modern era and its impact on the nature and role of architecture in contemporary society today. The ‘Introductory Course on Contemporary Architecture’ which is available to the public initially, will at a later date, be available to interested professionals from related disciplines such as planning, development etc.

The Public Lectures will run for three consecutive Saturday mornings, each comprising a two-hour lecture session followed by discussion and lunch. The First Series of three Public Lectures will be held on 23rd & 30th April and 7th May, 2005 from 10.00am to 1.30pm The Arts Block, Trinity College Dublin. Fee is €50 (includes Light refreshments). To book a place on the Contemporary Architecture Series, Log on to http://www.ticketlord.com or phone – 0818 220050 (no booking fee).

The Series will focus on some of the key generating forces and ideas in the development of modern architecture. The three central themes will be: Social Issues in Architecture; Role of Technology and Structure; Understanding Aesthetics.

Each theme underlies certain key advances and fundamental ideas in architecture and provides clear connecting pathways through the development of modern architecture. There will be an interpretation of some of the most important and influential architects, projects and buildings of the past century. The discussions at the end of each session will help to establish the relationship between the historic material being covered and contemporary concerns. Lectures will be supported by handouts covering the main points and include suggestions for further reading and exploration.

The Lectures will be delivered by Dr. Gary Boyd, School of Architecture UCD, Dr. Hugh Campbell, School of Architecture UCD and Ellen Rowley, Dept. of History of Art and Architecture, TCD.

The Series of Lectures will focus on the forces, ideas and theories which were central to the culture and development of modern architecture: It is proposed to be structured around 3 themes and will look at Contemporary work and its Roots in Modern Architecture of the 20th Century.
