Is the High Court endorsement of the Carlton Cinema site CPO a step forward for O’Connell Street?
High Court ruling over Carlton Cinema site
A High Court decision today could clear the way for the development of the Carlton Cinema site on Dublin’s O’Connell Street. The court rejected a challenge to a Compulsory Purchase Order made by Dublin City Council on the site in 2001. The challenge was taken by Paul Clinton, an architect and member of the Carlton Group, which had secured planning permission to develop the site in late 1999. The council had made the purchase order after deciding that the Carlton Group had neither the finance nor the development expertise to advance the project. -

Well done DCC
Although I am absolutely convinced that the site will be privately developed but not by the current owner, DCC would never take on 100% of the risk themselves, it is worth remembering that they only held 50% of the original Ilac Centre development with the other 50% held by Irish Life. The O’Connell St proposition is also complicated in that there is the potential to create an entirely new urban quarter here but there are numerous owners of the other buildings and sites. Clinton had his chance to put it all together and unfortunately he was unable to scale the hurdles that were put in his way by a number of people.
What will happen next I imagine is that the City Council will put the site out to tender and what will make or break the success of the scheme will be the criteria adopted in the tender, I really hope that the size of the finincial consideration will not be the only area on which tenders will be assessed.

Here’s a question – how much of the cinema interiors survive? Is there anything left from its original layout? You know the way that there are fragments of the original Savoy on exit stairwells etc.

Yeah, that is a good question. A few of us were talking about that on the O’Connell Street thread recently. When exactly did it close? (And why?)

late 80s early 90s?
I was in it a few times, not enough to remember much about it.

must have been 93/94. i have a vague memory of seeing naked gun 331/3 there, shortly before it closed. in my defense i was quite young…
really hope the development works out. it would be interesting to see it opened up to an international competition

This link was posted recently Phil. Nobody seems to know anything else about the interior other than what’s here:

Thanks for that Graham. Incidently, if you have a look at ‘Ireland and the New Architecture’ By Sean Rothery there is a great image of the interior of the old Royal (Where Hawkins now stands). It was absolutely massive.

Held 5000 or so didn’t it? Must track that down – always wanted to see its interior…
