I have just stared work on my thesis, I’m looking at the re-use and conversion of old mill buildings and ancillary buildings such as stores and warehouses. Just wondered if anyone out there is aware of any good examples of conversion around the country (particularly in the south east).

There’s loads of examples around. To name a few off the top of my head. there’s a fairly large one on the Quay’s in Waterford, its an arts centre or tourist office, almost directly across from the bus station. I know there’s an old grain store on Davitt’s Quay in Dungarvan which was converted to Apartments. The developers wanted to pull it down, but An Bord Pleanal refused that andt a revised scheme was done incorporating it. D Dillion in Dungarvan was the architect if I remember correctly. Richmond Mill in Clonmel is another, which was converted to apartments and there’s one or two in Cahir Co Tipperary – Ed Walsh in Cahir was the architect for those. In Fethard Co Tipperary back in the 80’s an old mill was converted into a theatre… its used regularly, restored thanks to an ANCO (Fás) scheme.
Hope this helps.

Very sympathetic job done to a mill on the road to Dunmanway, just short of Enniskeane/Ballineen. Can’t remember the name of it but any auctioneer worth their salt in that neck of the woods will know what you mean.

I suggest you pay a visit to the last intact working mill in Ireland situated on the banks of the Camac river in Old Kilmainham. Although listed by DCC as a unique protected structure they (DCC) have given planning permission for its intact interior to be gutted and the mill proper and its grounds to be become yet another block of apartments – surely a more benign use (tourism/cultural) should have been insisted / encouraged for a unique building in a unique setting. Go see the proposals for the old mills ‘re-use’ I doubt if they would be allowed anywhere else!!

A little harsh!
Anyway, maybe try and find previous research or writing on conversions of old warehouses, mills ect in places like London Docks.
