I’m reading a very interesting book at the moment by Frank McDonald called Saving the city (details below). I’m sure many of you have read this already. What I’d like to know is does anyone know the background to why it is out of print (and has been for quite some time)? I heard that it didn’t get a reprint due to legal challenges. Is this true? And if so – by who and related to which sections? Any allegations I read seem pretty tame to me now and much of what was said appears to have been borne out by tribunals etc.
Anyone know what happened?

Publisher: Tomar Publishing, 1989;Saving the city was not withdrawn,AFAIK it was his earlier book ‘The Destruction of Dublin’ that was pulled for legal reasons. It is still on loan in TCD and Bolton St. libraries though and is a rollicking read re: the incompetant and corrupt governance of 80’s Dublin.
Is he currently in the process of writing a new book?
Does anybody have any details on expected release date?
Saving the City is a boring read there is only one target;

The Destruction of Dublin is available from Bolton St library and is a masterpiece, the targets contained within are multiple and his sense of humour legendery, I think he just assumed he was right in Saving the City, the Construction is much better and I’m looking forward to the next installment
Rather ominously, the very day that article was published about the Dept of Health disposing of Hawkins House and its proposed demolition was announced, my copy of the Destruction Of Dublin finally fell apart…

I got my pristine copy of “The Destruction of Dublin” in the Oxfam bookshop on Parliament Street – indeed I got a lot of very good books there.. well worth checking every few days….

Must take another look now that I think of it…I’d an inside track there – my wife used to work saturday mornings so I’d get a look through the stock in the back as well 🙂
My own copy was lent to a freind to give to her mother who as a resident of sandwith St was incensed by the demolition of archers garage,
Seeing as archers is now rebuilt it is time to recover it I think
Has anyone ever seen ‘Tending the City’ published about 1990 or so?
It was largely inspired by ‘Saving the City’ it has some excellent pictures of urban settings around the country especially Dublin & Cork, I have a few spare copies if anyone wants to contact me.
Well due to you all (and others in the real world :p ) I’ve had my eyes open online and elsewhere for a copy of Destruction of Dublin. Finally found a bargina dn recieved it recently – have just started it but it is very very good. Thanks for the recommendation.
I bought through Abebooks
They have a couple of other copies at the moment. (Expensive ones though.)Of course Dublin Public Libraries also have lots of copies available.
