I think its a lecture on Niemeyer rather than by Niemeyer 😉

Dr. Claudio Queiroz will give a lecture on Oscar Niemeyer’s work.

Dr.Arch. Claudio Jose Pinheiro Villar de Queiroz worked for 10 years with Oscar Niemeyer and is the former director of the School of Architecture and Urbanism of the University of Brasilia and a project professor. He is also the author of works such as the School of Arts of the UnB. Nowadays, he is the Director of the Instituto do Patrimonio Historico e Artistico Nacional (IPHAN) for Brasilia-DF.

Basically the speaker said the best way to understand Oscar Niemeyer, would be to go to the Cinema this evening and watch a movie called Hidalgo… and then if you were really, really ‘hooked’ plan a vacation to take in some of the many cultures, places and influences which go into making a country like Brazil, the kind of mix that it is.

I more or less got the impression, that he was trying to describe a culture or state of mind of a people who could ‘remember’ living in tents and moving freely around deserts etc, etc.

I think a lot of architecture in the modern movement, was directly linked to cultures shaking away the constraints imposed by colonial powers,… and making their very own bold statements. Hence why Brazilia I guess was built on a virgin site, rather than be connected with any old colonial city such as Rio.

      Any thoughts?

Or why UCD moved to the Suburbs and built a campus in the modernist style?

It is always nice to speak about experiences you know…. so recently I went out to UCD in the evening, explore the Arts and Commerce building, for a bit and how it is used… then I went and dined in the dining hall… modernist it definitely is… on a different scale and direction to that of Trinity campus…. it is.

The dining hall there in UCD is definitely a very clear statement of a modern interior space though…. I am surprised I never went in there before…. but I guess from the outside it just appears a bit boring… there was a graduation reception down stairs too, while I was going it.

When I came out then, I tried to understand, unsucessfully I might add…. which was structure and decoration… this isn’t always easy to distinguish in the Miesian style though… the corner column detail with the steel angle is nice though, on those very slender columns at the four corners… I am just not sure that the building is ‘set off’ as well as it could be… dunno.

I really like the Restaurant Building. I spent alot of time in both it and the Arts Building. Originally, the idea was that the Restaurant Building would look over the surrounding sports fields. This has been changed dramatically with the construction of the new Commerce Building. I really like the way it gives the impression that it is just floating there, if you know what I mean!? Most people hate the Arts Block. I am quite the fan however. I think it is probably because I was there for quite a while. I really like the covered bridge between it and the Administration Building.

Overall I felt it was well worth a visit to experience these university environments though…. since they do pose some interesting questions, suggest some interesting solutions… and people do use and behave differently in these buildings to how they would normally use the Arts Block in Trinity I think.
