Just looking through the entries, I was awe struck by the vast different array of presentational styles and ideas, that people judging the competition may have to deal with. There are indeed some very strong architectural concepts used there to design memorials of such scale. But the mere fact, that each entry is bar-coded just speaks for itself, in terms of how many entries there must have been!
Problem with gardens of remembrance like here in Dublin, is you get left with them years and years later, when they mean much less to people alive. Perhaps a new competition should actually be held to make some other kind of fitting remembrance to replace the Parnell Square monument, freeing up that site for some other usage? Even just glancing through a lot of these entries for the WTC competition myself, I don’t envy the job of ajudicators who run these competitions – a major amount of concentration must be necessary to stay focussed on the job and give each entry some time.

I was struck by the sheer number of them!!!
Over 4,000 from the US alone and from architects in Countries that have about 5% of US GDP.
I think that even if an architect isn’t shortlisted it is a good exercise as the architect gets to play a ‘semi-real game’ and gets a piece of their own Corporate art to boot. A bizarre mix of styles and presentation formats. I’d love the time to look at more of them 🙂

ParticipantThere are some strong architectural concepts there, it is just that sifting through all the debris, takes some much mental machinery, that you are probably going to be exhausted by the time you find anything worth actually looking at.
Alot of sculptors etc, entered and their efforts really wouldn’t always come across best in architectural presentation board methods. A bit like my own efforts in Bolton Street. But that is why I like spending a couple of hours last sunday looking through the entries and picking out ones, which made sense from an architectural presentation point of view.
Imagine the job of picking out a suitable competition entry to replace Parnell Square memorial?

ParticipantI will reduce this list as I can, and perhaps try to add a one line comment on certain ones. Note I don’t think all of these are my cup of tea, but I have included some presentations in this list, because they may contain just one diagram or drawing which in my opinion works, or gets across its point very well, with economy of means.
I haven’t read any of the verbal descriptions, just looked at the visuals. Some of these presenations have specific problems, I think which are worth noticing.
