“Gardaà ask travellers to move caravans on M1”

(15:08) Gardaà have asked travellers to remove up to 45 caravans, parked illegally at the end of the M1 Dublin to Belfast motorway, by this afternoon.
Gardaà said the caravans, located on a central reservation on the road near Dundalk, were causing danger both to road users and to the travellers themselves.
The caravans, housing up to 150 people, arrived in the area on Friday night, accompanied by 30 vans as well as several cars and lorries.
It is understood the travellers came from the south-west of the country to attend a wedding in the town.
Talks between the travellers and Gardaà took place this morning. Speaking on RTÉ Radio, Garda Superintendent, Pat McGee, said the gardaà have set a deadline for this afternoon for the removal of the caravans.

Travellers move off from M1 motorway
(20:51) “Some 150 Travellers moved northwards from Dundalk tonight after gardaà threatened to forcibly remove their property from the median of the M1 motorway near the town.”
I must try that the next time I go to a stag do in Amsterdam, you could save a fortune on hotel bills.

the fact is there isn’t enough hard stand accomadation in dublin, very little permanent and virtually no temporary. before we start criticizing where travellers stop, we need to change this situation.
there is also no legal accomadation between the canals, and no discussion of how this could be provided. i have suggested before running some sort of competition, say for students, to consider how culturally appropriate accomadation traveller accomadation could be provided in an urban context. I am happy to give a small amount of money, say half a grand, as a prize, does anyone have suggestions about how such a thing could be organized.

The Classic NIMBY issue.
I am not anti-traveller at all, over my years dealing antiques it was impossible not to deal with travellers. Just to clarify this they bought more from me than me from them. A particular group of them from Rathkeale dominated the industry for many years and from what I’ve heard they still do.
The issue for the travellers I was aquianted with wasn’t the provision of social housing, the expression ‘he had a wad of notes that would choke a horse’ springs to mind.
Most of the group were pioneers of the one off legoland pile on top of the hills in West Limerick. No expense spared in these 1980’s villas, but to fund this lifestyle they were rarely home. I don’t know if they had caravans at edge city when they were in Dublin, but they always had the latest reg transit.
I suspect that the occurance of last weekend/today was purely ceremonial, I’ve a bigger shinier caravan than my neighbour. But as a ceromony it should never have been plonked in the centre of a motorway.
That was entirely my point, what were 45 shiny new caravans doing in the centre of a motorway?
As for your competition go to Tuam Co Galway, I’m sure that the travelling community there would have plenty of suggestions.
Personally I’d have stipulated beside Archers Garage as they wouldn’t have far to travel to buy petrol. 😀
