Ussher Theatre, Arts Block, TCD 7.30 pmAaron Betsky (b.1958) is Director of the internationally acclaimed Netherlands Design Institute in Rotterdam. Betsky has made his reputation as a curator, lecturer, and author unafraid to challenge conventional thinking in architecture criticism. His “Architecture Must Burn” and” Building Sex: Men, Women, and the Construction of Sexuality” sparked debate in the fields of urban planning and gender studies. His previous publications include “Landscrapers”, “Violated Perfection” and critical studies of Zaha Hadid and Daniel Libeskind.

Sounds like quite a deep thinker!
Some interesting papers here about the teaching of music in higher level institutions – a lot of similar problems to that of Architecture I think. Thought provoking anyhow.

Just like I think that the Fluid Spaces projects in UCD were heavily influenced by the idea of Smarth Infill, I also found myself with Betsky’s lecture that US Architects sometimes have a deep understanding of much wider environmental issues than their European counterparts. I guess that is because Planning is consider more of a profession in the United States than it is here in Europe.
Has anyone seen the Discovery Channel documentary about ‘the BIG DIG’ in Boston. Highly recommended to understand a small bit about how complex designing in American cities really must be!

It is probably worth just including this link, for people who haven’t experienced things like the Yokohama Ferry Terminal in reality – like me – the photos are very, very good, both of the design and completed thing.
