ParticipantHey,
Just a quick question for you. (not an arhitect BTW, just thought you guys would know)
Is it standard practice for an architect to not allow changes to be made to a building for a certain amount of time after it’s built.
I wouldn’t be very surprised by that, but have you ever heard of the interiour not being allowed to be rennovated?
A few people in my college (DCU) were trying to see if the bar could be painted a different colour add new furniture etc to make it more friendly and this was the excuse we were told. I’m wondering if it’s true or if they just got confused between structural changes & interiour design changes.
Thanks,
– Kevin

ParticipantIt is a common misconception that architects retain a propritery right over their completed work. In fact once the work has been completed, the contract at an end, they have no input or rights to dictate what happens. It is in the good graces of the client if anything remains as intended. Frank Lloyd Wright would often visit his clients’ houses, sometimes uninvited, and rearrange the furniture to that as envisaged, greatly to the annoyance of the people who lived there. Seeking to have one’s work “listed” for preservation is one option but that would indicate an certain level of arrogance about the value of such work. When Mao was asked about the value of the French revolution he replied it was much too early to say.

ParticipantPaul Clerkin, you may be right, it certainly would be in keeping with the college’s attitude.
