ParticipantRedevelopment Plan “too ambitious” for Killarney
Plans for the redevelopment of Killarney Co Kerry have had to be scaled down. A pedestrian area “as wide as Grafton Street†was envisaged as the key to the new look Killarney but several buildings including a five-storey block with mezzanine are considered too jarring and too massive for nearby laneways and for the open character of nearby streets and historic buildings. The plans were for buildings ranging from 19 metres to 22 metres where the council has said the absolute maximum it will consider is 18.5 metres.Personally I think Killarney is already ruined by inappropriate development

ParticipantAt least the fabric is quite tight – Cities like Galway and Letterkenny have fared worst.

ParticipantIsn’t it a good thing that someone is being ambitious for Killarney? As an area it’s so important to our Tourism industry and yet the town is such a horrendous place to be in. Something needs to be done. I remember one guide describing it as “best seen from the rear view mirror”.
[The town not the surroundings]
I don’t know the development in particular, but I know in Tralee there are big developments of similar scale going up all around that are on the narrow roads – I guess you need a good balance of vision, ambition and pragmatism when planning in these provincial towns.
