Storm over plan to give 80 city trees the chop
A €5m revamp of Eyre Square in Galway envisages the removal of up to 80 of the 105 trees around the perimeter of the old square. But the plan has run into a storm of opposition from environmental groups.
The Galway Environmental Alliance is hosting a public meeting in Galway tonight to mobilise opposition to the plan to remove the trees.
The GEA has received a big response to its campaign urging people to tie a yellow ribbon around each of the threatened trees. Thousands of individuals have also signed a petition urging that the trees be left untouched.
GEA spokesman Niall O Brolchain said: “People are horrified at the thought that so many trees in the only public park in Galway city centre are to be chopped down. There is a general consensus that this is a crazy plan.
But the criticism has been rejected by Galway city manager John Tierney, who said the trees had to be removed because the landscape levels were to be altered.
He said that superior quality trees would replace the trees to be removed and that the new total would exceed the number currently at Eyre Square.

I think they are going the wrong way with Eyre Sq, they should put railings back up and plant it formally like Stephen’s Green. It needs to be contained and seperated from the bussle.
It is sad what has happened to open space in Galway, building that big retail park by the Corrib, where the Cinema is, that was so stupid and building on Palmyra Park was a crime. There was space for a park beside the Claddagh Palace too, where the old railway station was, and that was build on. There is still I think an opportunity to open up the area between Ceannt Station and the bay, that could provide a less formal park near a newly formal Eyre Sq.
well put it this way j seerski, do you think dublin would be better off if they removed the rails around stephens green, removed most of the trees, paved half of it and stuck a big toilet in the corner. this is what happened to eyre square after oiche an gaoithe mor and i was just suggesting reversing these changes.
The formally-planted urban park look would not suit Eyre Square or Galway. Aesthetically, I think it’s absolutely fine as it is.
The problem with Eyre Square by day is the traffic. The problem at night is the mass of pubs and clubs spilling out into fast food joints, then onto taxi ranks in a city with a very young population and woefully inadequate numbers of gardai on the beat.
I don’t see how digging up trees is going to fix that.you can’t go into stephen’s green after dark. that’s my whole point – railed off and shut off parks have to be closed during night hours. if you want to have a public space open during the evening, then it has to be very open, not surrounded by the massive trees eyre square is, which make it dark and dingy. i still stand by what i said [and it has a lot to do with the pubs and fast foot places ie supermacs] eyre square is a dump
