ParticipantI just learned about an interesting fact regarding the Spike. SIAC construction was the company called in to clear up and demolish the old Nelson’s Piller after it was blown up by the IRA, it’s rather ironic that they now are now involved in the construction process of building it’s replacement the Spike 35 or so years later!

ParticipantYeah, I one of my mothers uncles worked with that company (SIAC) before moving over with her to the US. He still remembers it, I guess because it was such an important part of Dublins history. He also reckons this was one of the first times hard hats were worn in Ireland. Boy has safety improved! Love the new Spike though, can’t wait to com over and see it.

ParticipantI heard a better story, when the ‘IRA’ (one-two man band) blew up the pillar, not one window in O’Connell Street was damaged, when the Army went in to clear up the stump several adjacent windows were blown out…….. Now that’s Irish officaldom for you!!!!!!
Is it true the same SIAC guys have been labouring at the site since?…

ParticipantYeah apereantly so, 30 years on the one job! Quite funny about the army, must have been bloody imbarasing for them. My uncle tells me thousands came to visit the army blowing up the remainder of the column. Its was then that he moved in with the SIAC guys to clear up their apparant mess.
