Not strictly architecture, but definitely design…
The City Council Formerly Known as the Corpo has said that they can’t put any place names other than “An Lár” on their new road signs cos the text would have to be too small to read.
Have a look at the new signs:

And, like the ‘Lights On Daytime’ campaign, this new traffic plan has no legal backing so they can’t actually force drivers to change their habits, can they?
I quite like the look of the new signs. They look like others i’ve see in Paris and Barcelona.

I’m sure its a euro standard…. i don’t imagine that the EU would let you just go and design any auld look and feel for signage
The signs look nice.
But as far as I can see, the only way to comprehend them fully is by learning off each of the these seventy numbered junctions they’ve created and also the names of all the roads in Dublin.
I mean who knows what the R806 or R815 are. I can see them on these map but I’ve never even seen them referred to as that before.
Also, it should read City instead of An Lar. These things are supposed to help tourists, not confuse them even more.Ever notice there are no signs to the second largest city, Cork , going out of Dublin?
Cork is a diversion off the Limerick road for traffic planners.
According to The Irish Times Breaking News “He (Seamus “don’t care who runs it” Brennan) is also said to be worried over the new signposts, which do not follow State regulations. Talks between the council and the Department of Transport are due this week.”

No doubt a test case will be taken next!
All they had to do was erect signs with the name of the nearest booser on them as Dubliners have always travelled these “orbital routes” with pubs in mind i.e. Take a right at The Black Horse continue until you come to Gaffney’s and then proceed until you see Mooney’s …if you come to a pub called An Beal Bocht you have gone too far so let me know and start over again.
The new signage should have at least been given a chance.
These signs are not magic carpets and the Orbital Routes are essentially Victorian and Georgian versions of the M50 !! designed for horse and carts. 90% of said signs now in DCC sheds it’s a joke at our expence. Pity Minister Brennan did not stay another week gliding along the state of the art Metro system in Barcelona then all the signs would have been up and would have directed him home once he managed to escape the bedlam of Dublin Airport. This is Paddy Wackery at its best – it’s a wonder it’s not been beamed around the world on Sky News.

The politics of the matter are unimportant.
The design of the signs is poor, and needs to be addressed properly. I’m just surprised they didn’t consider this earlier on in their ‘consultative’ process.
(note: personally I’m not convinced by the numbered junctions approach, but the design of the signs is unarguably well off the mark)
Wow, this must be a refuge for sign supporters. They certainly should have been given a chance but did you really expect people to be supportive of them at large? I didn’t – we never give anything new a chance.
I look forward to see what happens with the introduction of Luas and Underground maps whenever they arrive! “But look at all the colours!”

Anyone who loves the newly designed signs would they like to expain their meaning…..Ok ‘An Lar’ is city centre……but what about the rest………
PS…. I am a slow learner and slow driver.We only rate 2nd to Calcutta as the slowest drivers in the world because we have been lead by the slowest goverments / learners of city transport planning ever in the world.
