Can anyone please tell me when Summerhill bus garage first opened, what was on the site before the garage and did it ever operate as a tram depot ?. I have tried CIE, Dublin Bus, Bus Eireann, Irish Railway Records Society and the Transport museum in Howth but all I got in six months were 2 replies to say that they would get back to me. So far nobody has bothered to offer me any information.

The best place to go for that query would be the Bustravel Ireland site, run by Gabriel Conway.

      http://www.allaboutbuses.com

The site is split roughly into two sections, one for tourists and visitors telling them how to get around Ireland by bus, the other for transport enthusiasts.

The enthusiast section gives you as much info as you could ever want to know about the Dublin Bus system, and there is a Message Board. There is also a good photo-article (recent) on LUAS construction, with some shots of progress on the Taney suspension bridge.

I’m not sure when Summerhill opened, but I’m pretty sure it’s not a former tram depot (but Donnybrook, Clontarf and Conyngham Road are, while Ringsend was built on the site of a former tramways power generating station).

I will cut and paste the question to the Message Board, and when I get a reply, will post it here.

ps – for sake of disclosure, I am involved in the Bustravel site alo, so moderator, if you think this is too much like an advertising puff, please feel free to delete this post!

Thanks guys for your help and cooperation. LOB, I went to Easons online bookstore and ordered the book you mentioned.
Greg, thanks for the pointer (and again LOB) I followed the link and got the info I wanted. I will find out what was there before the bus garage probably from Thoms directory or old maps.
