InactiveComments are invited with reference to a recent proposal to excavate below St Josephs Primary School play / sports area for the construction of an underground public car park.
Considering recent and ongoing events both world wide and local will the above proposal put childrens lives unneccesarily at risk.
Terenure parents comments welcome.

ParticipantAny more details? Who is planning to build it, Dublin city council? And is it at the planning application stage?
It might be a good idea if it sucked some of the traffic off the streets around Terenure, but obviously a thorough EIS will be needed - January 30, 2002 at 1:25 pm #718065

Participant……..it sound ludicrous to build a multi-storey car park under a primary school of all places…..not to mention the noise and health implicationsm.

ParticipantIt preturbs me to think that they would use a human shield of schoolchildren to protect against an attack against what would definitley be a strategic node of suburban Dublin.

ParticipantWhatever about ventilation problems for health concerns, the only good looking multi-storey car park is a sub-terrainian one. Its easier to have exhaust fans than it is to make a car park look good. They are eye sores no matter where they are situated. I would fully support it.

InactiveJust back from our meeting at the Greenlea hall in Terenure.
Full marks to the architects they would now appear to be shelving the suggested car park under the school /church grounds. They were very responsive to reasonable points on safety? I assume.
the architect said ” Debate or discussion is a healthy thing” I agree!.

ParticipantI’ve seen public car parks constructed under public squares in Lyon, France and they worked extremely well. In essence I think it’s good idea, but it does involve tearing up the area completely whilst construction is ongoing.
Personally I feel that it was a good idea, and I don’t see how (if carried out well) it could have affected children in any way. I’d be interested in knowing if the architechts pulled out because of genuine problems with the plan or becasue they felt that they would have been slaughtered by undeserved and illogically based public opinion against the project.

InactiveThere are many public car parks under public squares.
Do you know of one that was built under a school play /sports area.
In my opinion If it had gone ahead it would certainly diminished the existing safety of the children.
Todays car bombs can be very large indeed and may not if going off be contained within a concrete structure.
Press reports said that Terenure gardai (police)have had to interview people with alleged links to international terrorists since Sep 11
A terrorist would not leave a car full of explosives ouiside his own home.
He would probably leave it in a public car park.

ParticipantI realise people’s kids are involved here so i suppose it’s not a joking matter…
However I really think that people are over reacting here… to think of ‘terrorists’ targeting a school full of children is crazy… ok so people are worried after ‘September 11th’ but we’ve had ‘terrorism’ on this island for hundreds of years and I really don’t see how the US and bin Landen issue has made that threat any greater.
If for some reason ‘terrorists’ do want to target a school then they can park the car outside the school… but to even think of that seems ludicrous to me…
It sounds a little strange to put a car park under an existing building when one considers the construction constraints, but if designed properly the ‘health and safety risks’ to the children should be minimal (think of schools on main roads with large trucks and busses passing by… have lived beside a multi-story car park for a short while and they’re not all that noisy as the cars are driving so slow… main road is much worse…)
Plumber u are obviously close to the situation and are directly affected by this so I don’t want to be disrespectful at all, but to be thinking of car bombs exploding and harming the school kids is a bit much in my opinion… way too much in fact…
If one was to extrapolate such an attitude then we wouldn’t be building very much today… mmmmm stadium would be a perfect high profile target…
Again strange place for a car park but global terrorists targeting a school in Terenure ?!?!?

InactiveNo person has suggested a school would be targeted.
I just beleive that it would be less safe for the children to play on top of a public car park. It’s as simple as that. There are tons of explosives unacounted for.

ParticipantWhat???
Plumber, you have GOT to be kidding us here. And I think we’ve all been well and truly had. But if you’re actually serious, then I might suggest that the greater danger to society could be eminating from your dangerously paranoid mind.
I really, really, really, really hope you’re kidding.
Yours sincerely,

InactiveI repeat again that in my opinion the children in that school would be less safe than at present if a public car park was constructed below their play are.
I really think that the debate should now be for the parents of the children in that school.
I would like to hear their views.
Perhaps we can hear some. - February 2, 2002 at 2:23 pm #718079

There are tons of explosives unacounted for.To begin with for some strange reason I seemed to have thought before that the carpark was to be built under the school itself which would be unusual !!
However Plumber having said that u never suggested that the school would be targeted u finish by saying that there are tons of explosives unaccounted for… so what are u implying ?!?
I think it’s absolutely crazy to think that the IRA/INLA/UVF/UFF/Al-Qaeda/ETA/whoever would think of putting explosives in a carpark in south Dublin… why would they want to do such a thing ?? Linking a carpark and explosives is a bit much for me…
As for the ‘safety’ of the children… I don’t really see the huge problem… kids play on public squares all the time (well at least in the rest of the world… haven’t seen many on Smithfield lately
) The carpark would obviously (hopefully !) be well designed so it’s not going to collapse… fumes would be extracted in a proper fashion… ok not a pretty site during the construction period but…
Anyway I’m a little mystified by the whole link to explosives… maybe NIMBY is creeping to a whole new level…

InactiveI believe postings on this particular issue are becoming a little remote from architectural discussion which is the purpose of this web forum.
It would appear that the matter is closed.

ParticipantOh my god – My office is over a car park, I can’t go home – my apartment is over a car park!!! I think I’ll go hide in a field somewhere.
Seriously though – if we worried about this sort of thing all the time nothing would get built. The metro (when built) and port tunnel would be prime targets for terrorism if some looney wanted to do so, and the M50 bridge – infact the list is endless – how about the Dawson Street Car Park – closer to the Dail, but we take risks every day in our lives and we just have to live with it!
I think they should build more underground car parks – the ones above land are ugly bloody things and take up too much room.

Participant…just on an additional note – Lyon, France really is a brilliant example of innovative town planning and street scaping – there are three public carparks underground stunning Squares…look at Place des Celestins (spelling is very possibly incorrect) in the city centre – some of been made in conjunction with the artist Daniel Buren – i would strongly advise anybody interested in this kind of thing to investigate further – better still go for a weekend – Dublin Corpo could learn a thing or two..

Participantfrom the ‘Sue Denham’ column in “The Sunday Times”
How low can you go? Terenure eyes under-playground parking
Parking is at a premium in many Dublin subburbs, but has it really got to the stage where we need to build carparks under school playgrounds? That very idea, howeever is being considered by traders and residents in Terenure
The denizens of the south county suburb hired Anthony Reddy Associates to draw up a local area plan. Small shops are having a hard time because “traffic calming” and bus lanes make on street parking a near impossibility. So why not go underground? One idea was to burrow under a school playground at the back of St Joeseph’s Church and Boy’s pPrimary School.
Sue did a quick ring around. “The proposal would be unacceptable and unrealistic” said matt Hume, principal of the school. “I’m assuming it would mean shutting the school grounds for the best part of 18 months. the disruption couldn’t be tolerated.”
And how would the Catholic church, owners of the land react? The local monsignor has made it clear to his congregation that he felt he had not been consulted.
“It would appear that there was less than enthusiastic support for this”, Reddy conceded. “These are merely suggestions. If there is opposition, they don’t go ahead.”
Maybe Terenure willhave better luck with another idea – inducing the Sunday World to take its noisey operations elsewhere…..

InactiveI think the article posted by MG just about sums up this topic for us.
It would have been nice to see a parents thought on the issue. but perhaps registering to post response is a bit off putting.I shall post a new topic soon
This one involves a very heavy concrete cracking drop hammer and an ancient and vunerable house. Thank you all

Participantnot wanting to prolong this… but…
it would mean shutting the school grounds for the best part of 18 months. the disruption couldn’t be tolerated
Perfectly reasonable and just argument against such a development…
Considering recent and ongoing events both world wide and local will the above proposal put childrens lives unnecessarily at risk.
mmmmmmm….
ANYWAY good to see people getting together and meeting with residents, business people etc at an early stage to discuss possible developments before everything is done and dusted with only a ‘yes/no’ answer required… long may it continue…
