Those new gates seem out of place – they obscure a lot of the walls, especially in the tunnel entrance to the square.

ParticipantThey seem particularly clumsy and overly heavy. What point in a public space that you lock?

ParticipantThe gate onto Eustace Street is a philistine act of pure vandalism, installed without reference to either the architects or artist who designed the passageway.

InactiveThe gates were put there to keep out the vandals at night.Misplaced or whatever it says more about the elements of Irish society.

ParticipantOkay maybe they needed gates but they could have been designed in conjunction with the original architects… the gates at the photograhic archive completely spoil the curved wall into the square….

InactiveSaw the gates yesterday, I have to agree it looks as if some cowboy builder quated a cheap price and was given the job.
I’m suprised this could happen in Temple bar which has an organisation overseeing it’s developement, maybe they’re dozzing off as Temple Bar nears completion. - June 27, 2000 at 11:51 am #717095

Thank you for your e-mail, the gates are on trail on a temporary basis
during which time we will review the impact on our security arrangements on
the Square. Unfortunately it has been necessary to erect gates on the
entrances because of security requirements. The design has had to be a
comprise between the look of the gates, engineering capabilities, wind
loading and to avoid providing a surface for graffiti.
Again thank you for your comments

KeymasterTemporary for over a year now. If they intend that they become permanent, how about a decent design? An international student competition to design the gates and get something half way interesting.

Participantif the reconstruction of this area had been caried out more according to the group 91 plan in the first place, ther’d have ben no ned for gates in the first place.
In particular, the positioning of the new padestrian bridge, which was to lead to a new passage / mini street leading past the phot archive and into meeting house square. All or most of that padestrian traffic would now be passing through the square, and this constant movement and presence of the public would prevent or at least extremely reduce any level of negative activities currently tending to occur (hence the supposed need for these gates). - November 6, 2001 at 5:55 pm #717098

KeymasterWell thats crying over spilt milk now, and those gates have got to one in one way or another. Very crude, wouldnt look out of place in a farm yard.
