InactiveWe are working on a project in Glasgow, which uses large random cut blue slate as a cladding material on the elevations. The slate is smooth cut and polished and the colour, tone is constant , however in about 10% of the cladding, a football sized “oil” type stain appears which is supposedly a natural product of the slate itself. It is unsightly and we want it removed by the supplier, who refuse, can anyone advise. Your help would be appreciated

ParticipantDid the supplier advise you of this “natural quality” before you specified it?
ask the supplier of a list of locations where this product has been used previously and ascertain whether in those instances the blemish was tolerated-discuss with the Architects what was agreed. did they accept a 10% wastage on the supply?
Talking to previous specifiers is you best bet ( Architects who have dealt with that company previously on this product-check their clients list)
Hope that helps in some way. - July 31, 2001 at 3:38 pm #716698

InactiveThanks Lob, my difficulty is that in Glasgow and Scotland, although blue slate is an “indigenous” building material it is used only on roofs, never, as far as I know, as external cladding and in large sections. Any projects in Eire that can be viewed and architects contacted?

Participantwhile I try and dig something up, here is a site for welsh blue slate (cladding). it might be useful http://www.welshslate.com/cladding.html
You should talk to them about their experiances (as a competitor they may be more forthright and helpful in terms of normal procedure in this type of situation - August 1, 2001 at 12:54 pm #716700
