Have a look at Ranelagh.
It is a forest of closed and for sale shops, on both sides of the triangle. Of the others many have lost their shopfronts recently, sometimes the replacement is not too bad, sometimes it is just plain bad.
In recent days the toilet block in the triangle has also got the chop, – being demolished in a day and a half.

Apparently, Paul Kelly has a relly nice proposal for the Triangle, incorporating an outdoor seated cafe, etc…..
Im hoping thats whats going to happen there..Can anyone confirm this?
It is a lovely space, but it was a shame to see those two trees being knocked.
There will also be a Luas station nearby, at the ‘neck’ of the Triangle, on the Rathmines side…..

Yes, Paul Kelly and his buddies are creating a new civic plaza at the Ranalagh triangle.
Im sure all have noticed that Ranalagh triangle had become little more than a traffic thoroughfare, taxi stop & general cornerboy hangout (excuse the antiquated terminology). The new plaza, cafe, tourist info, toilets will bring new life(especially at night) to this important & well known space -

At their website http://www.fklarchitects.com/ there is information on this project – http://www.fklarchitects.com/ranelagh.htm

Had a look at the site – project looks interesting, however as a former ranelagh resident I think the problem with the Triangle was the contents of the buildings around it, all seemed to shut up shop at 5:30 except for the chipper so there wasn’t much life in the Triangle (other than the angry Taxi queue from Night Owls – is that place closed now?). Plus the road there is incredibly busy on the way into town. My only concern with the design is that the Trianle may end up like the 5 Lamps Jnction on the North Strand (a bit barren looking).
Oh and love the way the before picture is in Black and White – makes the project look like it is adding colour to the drab lives of Dublin 6 residents…

There was a very good article by the late Deirdre Kelly in the Irishwoman’s Diary column a couple of years before this talking about the structural shift in business types in Ranelagh: from literally 2 of everything Ranelagh went to shutter City before becoming cafe City

Well originally posted over five years ago my me, I see.
Where does time go?In all that time absolutely nothing whatever was built on the triangle spot, where the toilet block was demolished. It is just an expensive road obstruction to make car drivers life more difficult.
I think that the “tentative design” for “this” is still on display down near the LUAS station.
(Anyone see the design for the Tara Towers in the Times last week – Centrepoint in glass.)
