this probably isn’t the place to post such an inquiry … but does anyone know what’s happening to the riai website ??? ie when will it be up and running again … i actually liked the previous design … didn’t really see the need to change

Every incarnation of the RIAI website has been a disgrace to the profession and I don’re really expect the new one to be any differant.

I read in the August issue of the Irish Architect’ that they intend adding new features to the site. Tow things occur to me: a) they’re going to copy ideas from Archeire.com and b) how will they maintain it. Archeire.com works because Paul is afaik heavily involved in the Internet industry and thus has the capability.

I’m new in town and am interested in attending lectures, building visits etc
I was wondering if the AAI has published
its events for the forthcoming season and will it posted on the net around the same time

Also when will the new riai site reopen?

As soon as I receive the AAI events, they will be posted on this website. We also try to promote all the events from other organisations as well.

I know from a reliable source that it should be up again within a week or two and it looks great

i completely agree MG… i think its crap and certainly no improvement on the last effort… much more on the last site and its layout, colours, etc were much better…

ps didn’t notice any link to here either…

Am very disappointed myself, again the same flaws that has always afflicted the RIAI sites: broken links – had trouble getting back to homepage from various pages; terrible design – those colours are woeful and there’s too many of them. I hope they didnt pay too much.

I work as an Internet developer for a living and I can see so many holes regarding search engine placement, poor quality freebie scripts (the site search is awful) etc – broken discussion… a banner ad on the homepage that is clearly stretched…

i’ll be interested in hearing John White’s opinion of the design as a designer and artist

if the riai would like me to come in and audit the site, they know where to find me…

    MG,

to post a statement without any back-up, leads me to the conclusion that you have a personel problem with the RIAI and will attack whenever you can, this being an example. Just because it does not look like a TombRaider site and does not have nice colours does not make it a bad website. All the information required is there for members to use. I was wondering could you go into more detail about the problems with the web site rather than just stupid personel gripes.

I’m entitled to my opinions that

    * the colours are nasty
    * the sites tired and poor quality

without it being an attack on the riai — rather it is an attack on the websites which in the past have been very unprofessional. The current one is better but the colours suck.

I had a look at the website to see what all the fuss was about and I was expecting something really garish and well….it’s not that bad. The colours are quite jazzy but they do clash I suppose. Maybe one would’nt associate such colours with architecture I suppose…grey would come to mind but if you consider the colour of the Project Arts Centr well there you have it. Orange and Red together is a no no……. but the wine colour and airforce blue are quite complimentary and look good as well as the logo typeface in the top corner. The layout is good too and very easy to read and follow.

I’m too busy working on two sites of my own today to look past much more than the front page but I’d quickly suggest:

    • Too many conflicting colours – the main pink header accross the top should probably be the blue/grey of their logo with the text in white – without the top and bottom stripes

    • the colour arrangement and construction of the left and right column buttons are conflicting [too similar whilst being different. Know what I mean?]

    • Too many conflicting typefaces

    • The seemingly Archeire-inspired divider/header graphics are a good move but the alignment of the attached photos seems a little zig-zaggy

Generally speaking – not hideous, just needs a little more very simple adjustment. Wouldn’t take much really. I’d say: whatever the nice touches are, try to repeat them throughout the rest of the page/site – rather than allowing a designed by commitee look to creep in.

That’s my aesthetic-review based a quick examination. Hope it’s not too harsh,

    J

    Guys,

thanks for your opinions, you too MG, I hope I did not insult you, no offense meant. Since we are discussing websites in general, maybe we should open a forum to discuss what we would like to see on web sites like Archeire, BuildOnline, Construct&Design and construction Plus. So rather than been told what we want, we can tell them what we want.

    Let me know…..OPTI
