KeymasterAfter the other brief discussion, I passed the former Meath Hospital this morning and took a few quick photos… its an interesting building – not as monolithic as a quick look would suggest
There are interesting uses of porthole window, cantilevered concrete canopies etc..
Nice well lit staircase at far end – porthole windows on very top….
Main facade to street….
Main front….
Main entrance….
Looks like a small roof garden on one of the terraces on main block…..
I have much larger versions of these but for interest of download time, i havent posted them…..

InactiveThey’re demolishing most of the nearby Adelaide, so I assume that a similar fate will ecventually befall the Meath.

ParticipantThat’s a terrible pity.
I don’t find it a very beautiful building but it has genre style. The interiors as I said before are pleasant with the Terrazo [marble chip] floors. Nice windows. A piece of history. Probably a fairly good quality building too.
Why can’t it be adapted? I presume it’s replacement will be a pile of tripe as usual…
Sad really,
John

ParticipantThere is now a “Sold” sign on the hospital buildings so I guess its days are numbered. In these days of rising rents, it would make a great hostel / student accomodation for the nearby DITs.

ParticipantThere was a crane being constructed here, yesterday.

InactiveTHE Meath building, whatever the quality could be vastly improved along with a lot of streets in Dublin if there was some thought put into quality tree planting along the street (SeanMacDermot St. in particular which wouldn’t look so gloomy).

KeymasterJust checked, the crane is in fact at the Iveagh trust buildings on Kevin Street, its just looks like its at the Meath from various angles….

InactiveIn response to ‘Breeze’ Sean MacDermot street and the surrounding areas would have to be one of he most ugliest parts of the city. A few trees would be mere wallpaper and not substantial enough to hide the major cracks.

KeymasterWhat’s the current state of play of the Meath? I still think it would have made great student accommodation for DIT.

ParticipantI think it already has a new use. Not sure what though – might be able to find out though.
Have to say as a child I never encountered such a scary building in my life as the Meath hospital, when visiting a relative.
During the day was bad enough, but coming out in the dark, lit with sodium streetlights it was the place of nightmares.
Nothing, not even Victorian convents with 50s interiors and strange smells could compare.
Love it now though 🙂
