The Architecture of Democracy has shown us what it’s like to have an architecture exhibition which has actaully been designed – pretty amazing.

The last few exhibitions in the RIAI have been pretty uninsprining I have to say. The exhibition of Niall McLaughlin/Gerard McCreanor and Don Murphy was so lazily put together that they didn’t even bother labelling any of the models or some of the drawings.

Would there not be some mileage in having proper architecture galleries in our cities?

Maybe not architecture galleries, but with so many big exhibitions elsewhere over the past few years: eg Living Bridges in the Royal Academy, various Vitra ones, surely the AAI or RIAI could get it together to try to bring one of them over here at the very least.

I also saw that show you are talking about and it was (at the risk of sounding sanctimonious) an absolute disgrace. Even if they have no money, not even labelling the drawings was really bad.

I firmly believe that we need a proper dedicated exhibition centre well away from the auspices of the RIAI who afterall are there to promote and protect their member’s interests.

A dedicated space in Temple Bar or city centre would be good, could merely be a small shop unit. Being more central than Merrion Square, it would encourage people to drop in. Perhaps even having arch. magazine etc scattered about to encourage people interested in architecture to hang out and discuss.

An idea would be to have an architectural competition every year to redesign the space and change the facade.

Good plan. Where do we start?

Personally I’d love it for Archeire to have something like this or be involved but unfortunetly without some sort of funding it wouldnt be possible. The whole thing behind Archeire is making architecture accessible to the masses, and a development like this would be something that we could promote as a positive development.

Having an permanent exhibition space would be good for architecture and public appreciation of it. Now if someone has loads of funding…..
