I’m sorry but i find it leaves me cold and shocked. A more windswept barren landscape I couldnt imagine. The “oilrig” aesthetic of the braziers is disappointing and all the whole ensemble needs is a triumphant army parade.
I agree wholeheartedly with you. The space just seems too long and narrow now without th e trees. I will say that I like the viewing platform on the chimney, but I do think that the the space is going to turn into one of those civic spaces without any citizens
I’m sure that it will get better over time, its just that the current developments like Chief O’Neills do not embrace the space in front, preferring to hide behind the wall of the old distillery. Lets see what happens with the development of the Duffy brothers Scrapyard, hopefully it will have the retail units to bring the area to life. Does anyone know whats going on there?
Don’t forget that its only March at the moment, Lets see how the place looks in the summer – probably dusty from the building sites around the area, but I’m sure the place will start to catch on. Why not have something like the Temple Bar Market in the place, It would attract more people down there than the Horse fair.

I’m doing a dissertation on the development of Temple Bar and how it has affected the rest of the city. Does anyone think that the route from Henry St to the new square will develop in a strong enough manner so as to draw pedestrians right down to the square. Do you think that the new pedestrian bridge will change the focus of pedestrians to a more westerly direction towards Smithfield?
Smithfield is great, the absence of structures in Duffy’s is the cause of the problem. If you are walking/driving on the south quays to the West, one observes this great vignette through the narrow streets. If a proper framework is put together for the area, it will create that ‘surprise effect’, that one should experience on arrival to a major urban space. And yes, the braziers are wonderful when alight.
