As an Irishman from Dublin currently working in Asia I think that the 120M rod of stainless steel will only make everybody laugh. I am sure that the joke will be on us. With our dynamic talent and culture that we have in our country and this is the best that we can do. We are now so-called Europeans and that term alone should tell everyone that yes we have beauty and history woven in our very skin. Was the idea of a circular sandstone fountain with bronze statues showing the struggle that the Irish people have had for the past 300 years just too much to accept? I don’t mean anything related to violence either, just something pleasing to the eye, something to spearhead our youth’s imagination in to the next millenium.

ParticipantI am currently researching for a documentary on
the history of monuments in Dublin’s O’Connell
Street. I am particularly interested in the previously
proposed Millennium Arch and Ian Ritchie’s design
for the Millennium ‘Spike’. If anyone has information
that they feel would be relevant, I would greatly
appreciate it if they would e-mail me at

InactiveJ. Caulfield. There was quite a good article in FX Design Magazine (few months ago)about the ‘Spire’ and other monuments proposed for that site. Interesting read on why a ‘monument’.

InactiveIs there any news on this – how long can an EIS take? What’s the current estimate of when
it goes up (if it does go ahead?).
