1899 – Broomley Grange, Stocksfield, Northumberland
“Broomley Grange, situated at Stocksfield, Northumberland, in the valley of the Tyne, was built for Mr. J.H. Armstrong from designs prepared by Messrs. Armstrong and Knowles, of Newcastle-upon-Tyne, who have since dissolved partnership. It is built of local stone in squared rubble-work, with ashlar dressings and half- timbered work filled in with roughcasting. The roofs are covered with deep-red Ruabon tiles. The half-timbering is coloured a dark red — maroon red — the roughcasting being a warm buff, and the window frames and casements white. The general effect of colour is refined and pleasing, the natural contour and surroundings of the site lending themselves successfully to the general effect.”
