1899 – Design for Church of England, Creswell, Derbyshire
“Messrs. Brewill & Bailly are the architects, whose drawing of this building – we are illustrating today. No particulars of the work have come to hand, and the plan accompanying the view shows the contrivance of this picturesque church.” Published in The Building News.
Creswell, original an agricultural area, expanded throughout the 20th century after a lease was obtained from the Duke of Portland in 1894 for the top hard seam of coal in the area and Creswell Colliery came into being. The Bolsover Colliery Company owned the pit until it was nationalised in 1947. Creswell Model Village was built in 1895 to house the coal-mining families. Expansion of housing continued throughout the 20th century. Architects Brewill & Bailly designed many buildings in the area including the school and housing.
