1928 – Former Canadian Wheat Board, Winnipeg, Manitoba
Architect: Northwood & Chivers
The original Canadian Wheat Pool building of 1928 by Northwood & Chivers is designed in a simplified and modern neo-Gothic, almost Art Deco in its treatment. Finished in Tyndall limestone with heraldic carvings symbolising the wheat producing provinces. It has a large doorway portal, a simpler version of that at the nearby Bank of Hamilton building, which unfortunately is missing its original doors and surround.
A later addition of 1962 by Smith Carter Searle Architects was designed to co-exist with the original façade using the same window rhythm and sizing. The 1962 extension is separated from the original by a vertical band of polished black stone.
