2020 – Unbuilt proposal for Dock Mill, Grand Canal Docks, Dublin
Architect: Urban Agency
A proposal for a 50-metres-high Dock Mill, thirteen storeys, which was intended to be one of the tallest timber buildings in Europe. The plan was to house office space in the new timber tower, while the existing mill will be home to apartments. Its double-height top storey had a winter garden with tall trees and plants.
A double-skin glass facade wrapped the timber structure of the new extension, which the studio envisioned as a “modern take on the glasshouse”. To fulfil the sustainability criteria, Urban Agency chose to work with cross-laminated timber (CLT), which they stated would suit the restrictions of the site and help with time efficiency.
