1910 – Royal Bank of Canada, 460 Main Street, Winnipeg

This is New York architects Carrère & Hastings only work in Winnipeg. Its relative simplicity and austerity is a contrast to the elaborate Bank of Toronto next door. Choosing not to compete visually, the architects opted for a Renaissance palazzo in design with a tiled roof above the stone façade. Inside the banking hall was the expected marble walls, floors, and counters. Only in use as a bank for a short time as the Royal Bank took over the Union Bank and used its Winnipeg building as its local headquarters.
