1890 – Sanford’s Wholesale Clothiers, 91 Bannatyne Avenue, Winnipeg
Architect: Charles H. Wheeler
A fine warehouse constructed at the corner of Princess Street and Bannatyne Avenue as a clothing warehouse. The Sanford Manufacturing Company was based in Toronto but had wholesale branches in Hamilton and Winnipeg, as well as sample rooms in Toronto, Montreal, Ottawa, Calgary, Alberta, Vancouver, and elsewhere. The clothing produced by Sanford was labelled with the name “Sovereign”, which was a guarantee of style, quality, and finish; and were regarded as being of the best available in the Dominion. A massive fire in 1941 destroyed most of the building leaving only the ground floor remains. It has been several businesses since including restaurants and nightclubs.
