1912 – St. Stephen’s Green Gallery Proposal, Dublin
Architect: Sir Edwin Lutyens
The lesser known of the two suggested concepts for a gallery to house the collection of Sir Hugh Lane. Lane was keen to use Lutyens while the city and the RIAI were pushing for an architectural competition with Lutyens as assessor. Lane was most enthusiastic on the bridge gallery proposal over the Liffey where the Ha’penny Bridge is located. This design by Lutyens proposed siting the gallery in St. Stephen’s Green near the Royal College of Surgeons – this was also rejected by the city. With Lane’s death on the Lusitania, the schemes died. Eventually Charlemont House on Parnell Square was converted into the Municipal Gallery.
