1912 – Surrey House, Norwich, Norfolk

Architect: G.J. & F.W. Skipper

0052

Constructed after an architectural competition as Norwich Union head offices. Grade I listed as an example of Edwardian architecture and built between 1900 and 1912. Skipper was commissioned by The Norwich Union Life Insurance Society’s directors to produce a ‘splendid yet functional office space’. Like banks and other insurance companys of the time, the companys wished to project solidity to reassure policyholders of the company’s strength and prosperity. The site had been previously occupied by a house owned by Henry Howard (1517-1547), Earl of Surrey, hence the name.
