1963 – Finger Building, Dublin Airport
Architect: Leo M. Carroll, Department of Transport and Power
Also called Pier No.1, the Finger Building was designed to add extra gates to the original terminal building. Planes were getting larger, and it was needed to cope with these larger aircraft. It delayed the inevitable decision that a new larger terminal building was needed because of passenger demand, that was finally constructed in the early 1970s. Like the original building, the Finger Building featured rooftop terraces to view planes arriving and departing. The building itself was almost entiredly glazed on the upper level with open areas underneath to allow airport vehicles access.
