Originally known as the McGregor Armoury, this military facility was designed by Winnipeg architect Herbert E. Matthews. The building has four cornerblcoks around a large open internal space. . The fortress motifs which are characteristic of Canadian armouries, include the stepped parapet profile, low arched entrance and the corner towers. It still performs its original function as an army training centre. The armoury has two-storey, flat-roofed blocks with projecting three-storey corner towers, at either end of the drill hall. In 2018, the armoury was renamed Lieutenant-Colonel Harcus Strachan VC MC Armoury, on the 101st anniversary of the first Battle of Cambrai where he won the Victoria Cross. The Fort Garry Horse Museum and Archives was established in the Armoury in 1978.
