Interesting modern insertion into a traditional pub exterior. Also included a remodelling of the interior to include an off-license – the owner who had inherited the bar was more interested in wine. James E. McCabe & Co. went on to become the largest independent wine and spirit importers in Northern Ireland.

Sadly, on 12 July 1972, the scene of a double murder during The Troubles, a UDA member, and former police officer, shot dead two in McCabe’s Bar – the owner Jack McCabe (a Catholic), and a patron William Cochrane (a Protestant).

As a student, the architect Ian Campbell was part of the design team for the 1951 Festival of Britain Exhibition in Belfast. Later influenced more by Scandinavian architects and designers, particularly Alvar Aalto. He also won awards, including RIBA awards for the 1979 Teahouse at Tollymore Forest Park and his 1993 Railway Museum Galley at the Ulster Folk and Transport Museum, Cultra.
