2009 – Manitoba Hydro Place, Portage Avenue, Winnipeg

In 2009, this new 21-story office tower brought together 1,650 employees from 15 suburban locations into one high-rise on a full, downtown block. Envisaged as a series of lower buildings stacked vertically, it comprised two 18-storey wings flanking three 6-storey, south-facing atria or winter gardens. All on a three-storey plinth.

It was the first large-scale office tower in North America to be LEED Platinum-certified. Passive systems such as the south-facing winter gardens, natural daylighting, and the solar chimney take advantage of the environment and natural processes to reduce energy usage. Manitoba Hydro Place uses 70% less energy than a comparable office building of conventional design.
