1840 – Ballyconnell House, Falcarragh, Co. Donegal
Difficult to date but the landowners, the Olpherts, a Dutch family constructed a house here in 1763, but that was largely rebuilt and extended circa 1840. It has been suggested that John Benjamin Keane (d. 1859) may have been involved.
In 1921 the house was occupied by the Irish Free State Army and later purchased by the Irish Land Commission. The property was later transferred to the Loreto nuns, who added a new chapel, classrooms, and dormitories, and it became Colaiste Bhrıde, a school for girls. An English architect Robert George Hopcraft (1885-1947), carried out works at Ballyconnell House for the Office of Public Works and the Loreto nuns c. 1927, and he may have been responsible for the designs of this chapel. In 1965 it was purchased by the Diocese of Raphoe and became Holy Cross College, a boarding school for boys. It was used as a residence for boarding students until 1986. The estate was purchased by Údarás na Gaeltachta in 1987 but is now in an increasing state of dereliction.
