Funded, as it says on the plinth, ‘By the loyalists of Ulster as an expression of their love and admiration for its subject.’ Forty thousand attended its inauguration, unveiled by Lord Craigavon, in November 1932, the year the Stormont parliament building behind it was completed. The statue itself is by Leonard Merrifield (1880-1943) who was, appropriately enough, based in London. He created many large public monuments, statues and war memorials across the UK and Northern Ireland.
