1902 – St. Patrick’s Church, Trim, Co. Meath

Considered Hague’s masterwork and completed after his death by W.H. Byrne, St. Patrick’s is quite a large church with full aisles, short transepts and side chapels flanking the main sanctuary area. The exterior is quite grim, with the tall central tower looming over the main entrance. But the contrast with the interior is intentional, the interior is a riot of polychromatic colours and materials. Trim is important for the quantity and quality of internal decoration that survived the ravages of Vatican II reforms. Much of the sanctuary area, the high altars and the side altars were designed by Byrne. Reredos by James Pearse & Sons, the railings and pulpit, extensive mosaics covering the sanctuary walls and side chapels by Ludwig Oppenheimer all happily survived.
