2024 – Mayfair Library, Kilkenny, Co. Kilkenny
Officially opened in April 2024, the library, built on the site of the old Mayfair Ballroom (from which it gets the name), has been designed as a public facility with more than 1,800 square metres of community library space available over two floors. The Mayfair Ballroom was built in 1943 and was a popular social venue in Kilkenny until it closed in 1973. The library is designed to better reflect the needs of the 21st century than traditional libraries of books with a dedicated community exhibition space, programming and events throughout the year, public internet access, printing and scanning facilities, makerspace with 3D printing and scanning, and sewing machines. Externally it is clad with coloured louvres, in a pattern of colour based on the Fibonacci series, breaking up the light to some windows while allowing other windows to become focal points punching through the façade.
