John Grubb Richardson had been responsible for building the nearby village of Bessbrook. He acquired Mount Caulfield, south-east of the village in 1867, developing a more Victorian look including an ornamental millrace to the grounds. The house was given by Richardson as a wedding present to his son Later in 1943-1944, it housed officers of the US Army as they prepared troops billeted nearby for the upcoming invasion of Normandy. Still intact but in a poor state of repair.
